Your Go-To Postpartum Checklist: Everything New Parents Need to Feel Prepared

You’ve probably made a birth plan, packed your hospital bag, and stocked the diaper stash. But have you prepared for postpartum? Many parents spend so much time getting ready for the baby that they forget about what they will need after birth.

As
postpartum doulas, we can tell you that postpartum recovery deserves its own checklist. Let’s talk about what you really need to feel supported, rested, and ready for those early weeks with your newborn.

Why a Postpartum Checklist Matters for New Parents

Postpartum isn’t just the “after” part of birth—it’s an entire phase of healing, adjustment, and learning.

A postpartum checklist ensures you have the essentials to support:

  • Physical recovery
  • Emotional well-being
  • Nourishment and hydration
  • Practical baby care without overwhelm

Think of it as your backup plan for those foggy, sleep-deprived days when small tasks feel big.

Postpartum Recovery Essentials

Your body will need time, care, and comfort to heal after birth. Stock up on these recovery basics before baby arrives:

  • Peri bottle for gentle cleansing
  • Postpartum pads or adult diapers (yes, really!)
  • Witch hazel pads or sprays for soothing perineal discomfort
  • Ice packs or padsicles for swelling relief
  • Nursing bras and comfy clothes that are soft and easy to access
  • Pain relievers or stool softeners (check with your provider)

Bonus tip: Create a small basket with these items near your bed or bathroom for easy access.

Feeding Support and Supplies

Whether you’re breastfeeding or formula feeding, having the right tools on hand makes a big difference.

Consider:

  • Nipple cream or cooling pads for sore nipples
  • A quality water bottle to stay hydrated during feeds
  • Snacks you can eat one-handed (protein bars, trail mix, fruit)
  • Burp cloths and nursing pads to manage leaks and spit-up
  • A lactation consultant’s contact info in case you need help

Pro tip: Keep a feeding station stocked with essentials next to your favorite chair or couch.

Nourishment and Hydration for New Parents

Food fuels healing, milk production, and energy. But cooking every meal during postpartum? Not realistic.

Prepare by:

  • Batch cooking or freezing easy meals before baby arrives
  • Asking friends/family to drop off meals (and skip staying to visit if you’re not up for it)
  • Setting up a meal train so loved ones can sign up for delivery days
  • Keeping shelf-stable snacks nearby for middle-of-the-night hunger

Warm, nutrient-dense meals (think soups, stews, broths) are especially nourishing during postpartum recovery.

Practical Baby Care Must-Haves

You don’t need every gadget in the baby aisle, but a few practical items will make life easier:

  • A safe sleep space (crib, bassinet, or sidecar) with a firm mattress and fitted sheet
  • Diapers and wipes stocked in multiple locations around the house
  • Swaddles or sleep sacks to help soothe your newborn
  • A baby carrier or wrap so you can keep baby close while staying hands-free
  • A sound machine to create a calming sleep environment

Don’t worry about making everything perfect—you’ll learn what works for your baby as you go.

Emotional and Practical Support

The best thing on your postpartum checklist? Support. Recovery isn’t meant to happen in isolation.

Consider adding:

  • A postpartum doula to provide hands-on support, newborn care help, and emotional guidance
  • Therapy or mental health resources if you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious
  • A list of trusted friends/family who can help with errands, meals, or childcare for older siblings
  • A postpartum support group to connect with other new parents

You deserve people in your corner who care for you, not just the baby.

Why a Postpartum Doula Should Be Part of Your Checklist

A
postpartum doula bridges the gap between “surviving” and thriving after birth. We understand that the early weeks can be overwhelming, and we are here to help you feel confident, cared for, and rested.

With a postpartum doula, you get:

  • Warm, nourishing meals prepared for you
  • Newborn care guidance and hands-on help
  • Emotional support without judgment
  • Help with light housework so you can rest longer
  • Encouragement and reassurance when things feel overwhelming
