Feel Like a Pro with These 10 Newborn Care Hacks and Tricks

Unfortunately, newborns don’t come with manuals, and the sheer amount of new tasks (diapers, feeds, burping, oh my!) can leave you feeling like you’re just trying to survive. As Postpartum Doulas and Newborn Care Specialists, we've got a lot of tricks up our sleeve when it comes to newborn care and your sanity, and we're here to share them with you.

Whether you’re a first-time parent or just looking for ways to make life easier, these 10 newborn care tips and tricks will have you feeling like a pro in no time, bringing ease and convenience to your daily routine.

Ditch the Classic And Noisy Swaddles

Swaddling soothes babies mimics the cozy security of the womb—but getting it right can feel like folding a fitted sheet. We're here to tell you blankets and noisy velcro swaddles are OUT. There's a much easier way - use a zipper swaddle with double zippers for easy midnight changes, or silent velcro like
the Butterfly Swaddle for ease. Impossible to break out of, convenient, and quiet = more sleep for everyone. They make achieving the perfect snug wrap quick and foolproof, even at 2 a.m.

Keep a “Mini Changing Station” in Every Room

Constantly trekking to the nursery for diaper changes gets old fast, don't do it. Create portable diaper kits with diapers, wipes, and a changing pad. Stash them in
key spots like the living room, bedroom, and even your car. You'll be glad you have supplies you need, no matter where you are.

Use White Noise to Your Advantage

Babies love white noise because it reminds them of the sounds they heard in the womb. Invest in a
white noise machine or use a free app on your phone to help your baby (and you) get better sleep. Our first pick? An easy, portable, chargeable white noise machine with a light. Carry it around your house for naptimes and late night feeding sessions. You'll be so glad you have it!

Prep Bottles and Pump Parts in Advance

Whether you’re bottle-feeding formula, breastmilk, or both, late-night feeds can be a challenge.

Pre-measure formula in formula storage containers, or pump milk into bottles and store them in the fridge.

Turn Onesies Into Diaper Blowout Shields

Every parent dreads the infamous diaper blowout—but did you know baby onesies are designed to help? Those envelope folds at the shoulders actually let you pull the onesie
down instead of over your baby’s head, avoiding a messy disaster.

Pass Baby's Gas with the “Bicycle Leg Trick”

Sometimes getting things moving is harder than it should be, leaving your baby fussy and gassy. Lay your baby on their back and gently move their legs like they’re pedaling a bike. This helps release trapped gas and soothes their tummy. Be gentle and don't force the movement, as it can cause discomfort. If your baby seems uncomfortable or in pain, stop the exercise, this shouldn't cause discomfort but is meant to ease pain.

Prep Freezer Meals During Pregnancy

The last thing you want to think about after a sleepless night is cooking dinner. Prep freezer-friendly meals before your baby arrives. Having ready-to-go options can save you hours of stress (or takeout orders).

Use Babywearing to Keep Your Hands Free

Need to fold laundry, eat lunch, or just enjoy having two hands? Babywearing is your best friend. It not only allows you to multitask, but it also promotes bonding with your baby and can help soothe a fussy baby. Just be sure to follow the safety guidelines for baby carriers to ensure your baby's comfort and safety.

Find a wrap or carrier that’s easy to use and ergonomic for both you and your baby. It keeps them close and calm while letting you multitask like a pro.

Make Diaper Cream Application Mess-Free

Tired of getting sticky diaper cream on your hands? Use a silicone applicator to spread diaper cream. It’s quick, hygienic, and makes cleanup easier.

Accept Help—and Hire Support When You Need It

No matter how prepared you are, there will be days when you feel overwhelmed.

Lean on friends, family, or professional support like a postpartum doula. Postpartum doulas (like us!) provide hands-on help with baby care, feeding, and overnight support, giving you much-needed rest and peace of mind.

Bonus Tip: Trust Yourself!

The most important hack of all? Trust your instincts. You know your baby better than anyone, and your confidence will grow every day!
