My C-Section Recovery Journey: Your Guide to Thriving Postpartum After a Cesarean
Tiara Monson, Postpartum Doula, C-Section Recovery

Hey there! I’m Tiara, a mom of two, postpartum doula, and co-owner of Bountiful Doulas. In this space, I share not only my professional insights but also my journey as a mother who’s been through the highs, lows, and all the in-betweens of a cesarean birth. I’m here to walk you through my cesarean experience and share practical tips to help make your C-section recovery smoother. I hope my story and insights give you the knowledge, comfort, and encouragement you need.

My Cesarean Story

Back in the fall of 2015, at just 18, I experienced my first surgery while bringing my son into the world. Like many new moms, I went into pregnancy with confidence, feeling that if birth were natural, I’d be just fine. I didn’t take classes, research birthing positions, or prepare for the possibility of a C-section. But at 39 weeks, everything shifted. I felt unfamiliar movements, and during an ultrasound, my doctor confirmed my son was in breech with the umbilical cord around his neck. We decided on a C-section the next day.

That night, I was flooded with questions and worries: Would I have the strength to climb stairs at home? Could I breastfeed comfortably? I felt overwhelmed by the unknowns. When the day came, my doctor, anesthesiologist, and an incredible nurse walked me through each step. While my nerves calmed a bit, I was still unprepared for the emotional and physical intensity of surgery.

In the OR, I struggled with nausea, pressure, and discomfort as they delivered my son, and I couldn’t help but wonder if things would feel different if I had prepared for this possibility. When I finally held my son, the overwhelming love and relief made everything worth it, but the challenges of recovery soon set in, showing me just how crucial it is to have support and knowledge on this journey.

Top Recommended Items for Cesarean Recovery

Ice Packs
: In the first few days, gently ice your incision for about 10 minutes every couple of hours. Place a clean layer of cotton between your skin and the ice pack to keep the area comfortable and protected.
Frida Mom Mesh Panties
: These high-waisted, soft mesh panties come up over your incision, providing comfort without restriction.
Postpartum Pads
: Postpartum bleeding is part of recovery even after a C-section, so stock up on absorbent, comfortable pads.
Abdominal Binder/Belly Band
: These support wraps or bands reduce swelling and gently support abdominal muscles, making movement easier.
Nursing Pillow
: A C-shaped nursing pillow helps support the baby without putting pressure on your incision, making feeding time more comfortable.
C-Section Incision Pillow
: Coughing, sneezing, and laughing can be surprisingly painful. Hold a small pillow over your incision to reduce discomfort.
Peri Bottle
: A long-neck peri bottle makes rinsing easier and more comfortable when using the bathroom.
Fiber Gummies
: To ease your first bowel movements, consider a gentle fiber gummy or stool softener, but always check with your healthcare provider first.

Post-Recovery Tips for Thriving Postpartum

Prioritize Rest
: Sleep and frequent rests are key. Short, consistent naps throughout the day are as important as nighttime sleep.
Take Medications on Schedule
: Keeping a regular schedule for your pain meds helps maintain comfort and aids in healing.
Limit Stairs
: Stair climbing strains your abdomen, so if you have a multi-level home, try to set up a comfortable space on one floor.
Accept Help
: Don’t hesitate to lean on your support system—friends, family, or a postpartum doula. Having help allows you to focus on recovery.
Brace Yourself
: Gently press on your incision area (with a pillow or your hands) when coughing, laughing, or sneezing. This can make movement more comfortable and prevent strain.
Keep Your Incision Clean and Dry
: Follow your provider’s instructions carefully for incision care to prevent infection.
